Can Unused Funds Roll Over to the Next Funding Period?

Can Unused Funds Roll Over to the Next Funding Period?

What happens to unused NDIS funds when the funding period ends? Additionally, what happens to unused NDIS funds when the plan ends?

For those participants where their NDIS funds are released by funding period, many might be concerned whether unused funds in the current funding period will be carried over to the next funding period. The answer is yes.

However, there are some important points that you should be aware of to manage your budget effectively.

Unused NDIS Funds from one funding period will automatically rollover to the next within the same NDIS Plan.

If you have any unused funds from the current and past funding periods, the remaining funds will be automatically rolled over to the next funding period – only within the same NDIS plan. This allows you to utilise the support you need at different times across the NDIS plan periods.

Funding Periods help protect your NDIS Plan

Unused funds rolling over to the next funding period within the NDIS plan helps to protect your budget from early stages of overspending. The NDIS found service providers over servicing and draining plans within the first few months of the start date. Other benefits are :

Effective Utilisation

The unused funds rolled over from the past funding periods within the NDIS plan helps you to build up the supports and spending you need across your NDIS plan. For example, if you spend less in the first funding period, you can plan and readjust the support you need in the next funding period where you can utilise the remaining funds from the previous funding period. This will help you to manage your budgets without worrying about running out of funds too soon within the NDIS plan.

Better Control Over Your Budget

The release of funding in instalments and the rollover of unused funds into the next funding period allows you to plan the supports that you need more effectively and maximise your utilisation with progressive planning.

Important Limitation:

Unused Funds Can’t Roll Over to a New NDIS Plan

While you can roll over unused funds within your current NDIS plan, it’s important to note that these funds cannot be rolled over into a new NDIS plan. If your NDIS plan ends and a new plan commences (i.e. new Plan Start and End dates), any unused funds from the old NDIS plan cannot be transferred to the new NDIS plan. Therefore, it’s crucial to use the remaining funds within the NDIS plan period before your plan ends.

New funds can’t be used to pay for invoices of services incurred in the previous funding period.

You cannot use funds unlocked in a funding period to pay for invoices of services incurred in the previous funding period. i.e. paying off overspending in prior periods. This is a restriction that the NDIS has introduced to stop providers over servicing participants and draining their funds in the early stages of a plan

How to Manage Your NDIS Budget Effectively with Fund Rollovers

Adapting to the new system of funding periods and the rollover of unused funds can take some time, but it’s a positive change for many. To make the most of it, you’ll need to:

Track Your Spending Regularly

Keep an eye on how much funds you’ve used and the remaining funds in your current period. Tracking this regularly ensures that you won’t miss the unused funds at the end of each funding period.

Plan Ahead for the Remaining Periods

If you find that you have funds left over at the end of a period, you can plan and readjust the support you need so that you can have better utilisation of the available funds in the next funding period.

Summary: Making the Most of your Unused NDIS Funds

The roll over of unused funds to the next funding period within the same NDIS plan provides a better allocation of funds across the whole NDIS budget. This will help you to plan your support according to your needs without worrying about running out of funds before the end of your NDIS plan. However, be mindful that funds don’t roll over across two different NDIS plans, so it’s important to plan your support carefully to ensure you use all your allocated budget within the NDIS plan.
