The NDIS has been making the news a lot recently, and not in a good way.
The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) chief Michael Phelan has revealed that the scheme is too easy to exploit, with the scale of fraud estimated to be as high as 20% of total spend by the NDIS each year. This puts the dollar figure of fraud to roughly $5 billion dollars per year.
In 2021, nearly $45 million dollars in payments were cancelled due to fraudulency, but the ACIC’s latest findings indicate that this figure is scarily nowhere near the level of fraud occurring in the scheme.
How is this fraud taking place?
The NDIS minister Bill Shorten suggests there is evidence of ghosting, where fraudsters are creating fake claims and getting money without being reviewed.
There have been reports of providers overcharging for services beyond the maximum price indicated in the policy by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). This is done through padding, which is charging your plan more than the worth of services that are being delivered.
What is the NDIS doing to resolve these issues?
The NDIS has announced they will be forming a multiagency taskforce to investigate the issues occurring, bringing together the NDIA, police, and the tax office.
