Understanding the Role of Your Plan Manager

One of the most common questions we receive is:

“Can my plan manager tell me whether something is funded by the NDIS?”

In many cases, the answer is yes.

Your plan manager can review your NDIS plan and the information available to determine whether a support appears to be funded under your plan.

However, if a support is not clearly included in your plan, or there is uncertainty about whether it is funded under your plan, we may need to seek additional information or written confirmation before a claim can be processed.

Who decides what can be funded?

The NDIA is responsible for deciding which supports are funded in your NDIS plan.

When your plan is created or reassessed, the NDIA considers whether supports meet the NDIS funding criteria and are related to your disability support needs. These decisions are made by the NDIA, not by your plan manager.

The NDIA’s guidance on plan management states that “the role of a plan manager is not to determine whether the supports or services purchased are reasonable and necessary.”

What does a plan manager do?

According to the NDIA, plan managers help participants manage their funding so it is spent:

  • In line with their NDIS plan
  • On NDIS supports

Plan managers are responsible for the financial administration of a participant’s plan and helping ensure claims meet NDIS integrity and compliance requirements.

This includes:

  • Processing invoices and paying providers
  • Keeping track of NDIS spending and available budgets
  • Maintaining records of how NDIS funds are spent
  • Helping to ensure claims align with a participant’s plan and NDIS requirements

Our role is to manage your funding in line with the supports and budgets approved in your plan. Your approved NDIS plan is therefore the primary document we must follow when processing claims.

Why might we ask for additional information?

Sometimes a support may appear related to your disability but it is not clearly included in your plan.

In these situations, we may need to request:

  • Written confirmation or other correspondence from the NDIA confirming the support can be funded
  • Supporting documentation from an allied health professional
  • Other evidence relevant to the support being claimed

This helps ensure your funding is being used in line with your approved plan and NDIS requirements.

What if I need a support that isn't listed in my plan?

If your circumstances have changed, or you require supports that are not clearly covered by your current plan, you may need to contact the NDIA to discuss your options.

This may involve:

  • Requesting written confirmation that a support can be funded
  • Seeking clarification about your existing funding
  • Providing additional evidence about your support needs
  • Requesting a change to your plan
